Whilst the formal qualifications needed to start off in hospitality are few, there are courses available that will boost your portfolio and impress your future employer. The first (and almost always) necessary qualification you need is a Responsible Service of Alcohol (SITHFAB021) certificate. In Victoria, this can be completed online via multiple RTO approved websites, as well as in-person at various training institutions. Some universities offer the course for free, so ensure that you explore your options to find the one that works best for you!
Other qualifications that may be useful as you’re starting off your hospo career include Basic Food Safety (SITXFSA001), Baristas Coffee Course (Non-Accredited), as well as a range of wine and cocktail masterclasses that are available across Victoria.
A well-functioning venue is always built on teamwork and communication. Being adaptable and working as part of a team is essential when enduring the long hours of hospitality. Learning to work harmoniously with all team members and thrive in an environment where differing personalities reside will allow you to excel in whichever job you land.
I’m not going to sugar-coat it – working in hospitality requires a tremendous amount of flexibility in relation to rostering and mindset. Casual hospitality workers are often required to give up days that most people have off, to provide service with a smile on the busiest days of the year. Being flexible and making yourself available for work (without compromising your mental and/or physical health of course) as often as possible will ensure the most attractive outcome for you, in both financial reward and work experience.
One of the intrinsic hospitality skills for every employee is being able to juggle several tasks at once. As much as we’d like it, there is never just one task that needs attention in hospitality venues. You must be able to work on several things at once, prioritising them by level of importance and ensuring that all tasks are completed to the highest of standards.
Whilst this is more a point for people who are looking to make hospitality their life-long career, it is also a skill that bodes well for casual workers. Being aware of trends in food and beverage, product knowledge, and customer service are all things that will boost your portfolio and make you more employable. Striving for continual self-improvement is an asset that is looked upon favourably by employers, and doing your own research to stay up to date with evolving industry trends is a great way to showcase this.
